According to the official website of CEC, the No. 1 unit (the last one) of Upper Atbara Hydropower Station in Sudan was successfully connected to the grid at 9:30 a.m. on June 11, local time, and thus all the four vertical double-regulated axial-flow slurry units of the station with a single unit capacity of 80 megawatts (MW) have been put into operation to generate power, which has greatly alleviated the shortage of electricity in Sudan, and benefited nearly one million people.

Sudan Upper Atbara Dam Hydraulic Hub is the second largest hydropower hub project under construction in Sudan, which is of great significance to alleviate the domestic power shortage and solve the problem of agricultural irrigation water. With a design capacity of 3.6 billion cubic meters and an installed capacity of 320 megawatts, it has already formed a reservoir of about 3 billion cubic meters. After the completion of the project, it can irrigate an area of 500,000 hectares, and will solve the problem of irrigation water for 7 million people, provide drinking water security for 3 million people, and provide power supply for millions of people, and one-third of the population of Sudan will be directly benefited from it, which is a major livelihood project at the national level, and has been highly valued by the Sudanese state and local government.
